I'm not sure if its our responsibility to spend and conduct a water quality test on Vietnam. It will cost to buy the kit. Unless we discover a simple method in which all the villagers could use to assess their own water. It's simple but will be very useful for them.

Keep up the good work!

Hello guys,

A happy new year!
It seems everyone is fine and active. The projects look great even more, the energy from everyone is inspiring the others to do the same.
Pardon I could not join the meeting yesterday. Anyhow, I hope to join the next one. Until then, lets all work together for our projects!

Hi, this is Ishio.

I met Prof. Cross on 12/8, 2011.
And I made a presentation to him. I was referred to him by Prof. Abe.
I report on this thread about the meeting.

My objective was promotion of IDAcademy to create good connection with Prof. Cross and get support from them.
Prof. Cross is promoting AOTULE, a foreign exchange program (Asia-Oceania). And he wants to bring forward the program in Tokyo-Tech for students cultivation.

In conclusion, the meeting was successfully-completed. He was interested in IDAcademy. And he recommended to join the AOTULE program. He hopes IDAcademy and the Universities joining AOTULE create good connection.

I should research about AOTULE more.
If you are interested in the project, please search and contact to Prof. Cross by yourself. I want to see your independence.

The hexagonal star image looks like star of David (Jewish symbol) and have concerns about the copyright. I think we do not have to stick to 6, which is originated from number of continents, to address harmonization of our team. Say, 5 can do the same and have no concern about copyright.
BTW, I have watched CoeXisT design in U2's vertigo tour back in 2006: "COEXIST" with the Muslim crescent symbol representing the "C;" the Jewish Star of David, the "X;" and the Christian cross, the "T." Here is related story. You may feel interesting.

<Things to bring in>
Comics: (any themes)
Books: hopefully related to development so that undergrads can grow their interest and knowledge to development issue gradually.
Refer Library page for the potential titles. Books on leadership is limited so we can buy if you like.
Used TV and DVD player: let undergrads watch good movies- nurture their appreciation. have them think differently.
DVDs: Machida has "Blood Diamond", "Beyond Borders", "Always3丁目の夕日", "Before Sunrise"
Printed Manuals: Constitution, SOPs, Garage Rules should be accessible.
White Boards: Ishi kun's idea. Let them discuss freely. have them imagine future visions.

Name, Purpose, cleaning, management of the key, stuff & furniture to bring in etc can be discussed here.

Hi William,

I like the poetic interpretation of the original plan very much.

How about deciding the slogan as original one (Engineering Passion) and explain as follows when asked.
There is two meaning for it:
First, we build up and strengthen our passions through daily interaction among members (切磋琢磨) and we also provoke passions in other engineering students who got bored of the current education by having them involved in our activities. In this side, "Engineering" functions as a verb.
Second, it is by the infinite passions to technology-based solutions to social development that we make big difference to the existing paradigm in development practices. In this sense, "Engineering" functions as an adjective and stands for technological, innovative, needs-oriented etc. and passion means spirit or mind.
All in all, a little wired impression will leave haunting image to the memory of the people who hear the slogan. It is similar to the strategy of NIKE's slogan, "Impossible is Nothing". What do you think?

regards,
Kazu

Re: About Slogan by kazutoshi_machidakazutoshi_machida, 08 Dec 2011 03:27

Hi Kazu,

Thanks for the update, I thought about it more and its seems Engineering Passion is quite a catchy phrase.
I tried looking up whether slogans should be a sentence or complete, but there are no such rules.

IDAcademy, Engineering passion for social development,
can be understood as

Engineering (V) passion (N),
or as
Engineering (Adj,) passion (N).

Its kinda cool to have two sides to the coin.
I think making slogans has what can be termed as a "poetic license".
Which means, even grammar holds second place if the writer wishes so.

With that said, I think there is no grammatical problem, rather just a preference.
Its good to keep on improving though and we can search for even better options.
This is a good exercise for our team members also.

William
